Arya tara Shakya, a 2 year and 8 months old girl, has been named the new Royal Kumari of Kathmandu. She was chosen by the Shakya Mahavihar Association with help from community leaders, while the Guthi Sansthan and Panchang committee set the rituals and timing. After passing the traditional selection process, she will now live in the historic Kumari Ghar in Hanumandhoka and bless worshippers during festivals like Indra Jatra. Her enthronement, held with Newar and Hindu-Buddhist customs, begins her role as the Living Goddess of Kathmandu.

The Kumari tradition began in the 17th century during the Malla Dynasty, when the goddess Taleju Bhawani was believed to reappear in young girls after a dispute with King Jayaprakash Malla. Today, girls from Shakya Buddhist families are presented to priests and an astrologer for selection. The chosen Kumari must pass various tests, such as showing no fear of the dark, and then lives mostly inside the temple with little social interaction. When she reaches puberty, a new Kumari is chosen. Many former Kumaris face challenges adjusting to normal life after stepping down.
